Voi e-scooters are the new ticket to ride in Liverpool

Oct 6, 2020

In 1957, Paul McCartney and John Lennon met in Liverpool and made music history: The Beatles would go on to bring its influential pop music to the world. Sixty-three years later, Voi is making transportation history by bringing e-scooters (not yellow submarines) to Liverpool.

Voi, the UK’s number-one e-scooter operator, launches its e-scooter pilot program in the northern port city today. The trial, which will begin with a fleet of around 50 scooters, will stretch from the city centre to the historic waterfront and the Knowledge Quarter, to the Georgian Quarter and the Vauxhall area to the north. Initially, scooters will be available for hire from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Supported by the Department for Transport, the Liverpool e-scooter trial is one of more than a dozen taking place across the UK, including in the West Midlands and Northamptonshire, where we launched in September. The aim is to provide a low-carbon transportation alternative to cars and public transport, particularly in this time of heightened social distancing.

In urban areas, taking cars can be impractical and challenging. Sometimes the distance covered isn’t worth the hassle of traffic or the difficulty of finding a parking spot, not to mention the environmental impact of emissions. This is where Voi comes in — we’re hoping to change the transportation habits of Liverpudlians by offering them a fast, affordable, environment-friendly, traffic congestion-reducing option. And because e-scooters allow people to get from A to B in the open air, we hope to help minimise the transmission of COVID-19.

And here’s another reason to twist and shout: we’re aiming to create 50 new jobs in Liverpool and integrate fully with the local train and bus operators.

So how do you get started on your very own Voi adventure? Download the Voi app from the Apple App Store or Google Play. Scooters are available to unlock for a £1 and then cost £0.20 per minute. Voi also offers 24-hour (at £10) and 30-day (at £40) subscriptions that allow users to take more rides at a fixed rate. Subscriptions can be purchased in the app. To ensure that e-scooters are accessible to all, there are special rates for students, NHS and emergency services personnel, and those on low incomes.

Remember: the only way to ride is safely. Wear a helmet, steer clear of the pavement, obey the Highway Code, stay vigilant, and be courteous to your fellow road users. For more information, you can read about how Voi is making scooting safer in the UK. We also encourage all new riders to enrol in our free online traffic school, Ride Like Voila.

We’ve got your ticket to ride, Liverpool! We can’t wait for you to come together and join us!
