Do I need a driving licence to ride Voi in the United Kingdom?

Mar 14, 2025

Yes, in the United Kingdom, Voi scooters are classified as motor vehicles. This means in order to ride Voi, you need to be legally licenced to use and drive e-scooters in the UK.

Before your first ride, you'll be prompted to scan your driving licence in order to unlock a scooter.

Please note: Paper driving licences are not valid for verification and cannot be used to unlock a Voi scooter. You must have a photocard driving licence, which is the standard format required for digital ID verification.

You must have the category Q entitlement on your driving licence to use an e-scooter. A full or provisional UK licence for categories AM, A, or B includes entitlement for category Q. If you hold one of these, you're eligible to ride an e-scooter.

If you have an overseas driving licence, you can use an e-scooter if you:

  • have a valid full licence from an EU or EEA country (as long as it allows you to ride low-speed mopeds and motorcycles); or
  • have a valid full licence from another country that entitles you to drive a small vehicle (e.g., car, moped, or motorcycle), and you entered the UK within the last 12 months.

⚠️ You cannot use an e-scooter if you have an overseas provisional licence, learner permit, or equivalent.
