People in Northampton have now taken more than four million rides on Voi rental e-scooters.
The coral-coloured rental e-scooters have been operating in the town since September 2020, with just over 90,000 people signed up to ride them.
According to Voi’s externally-validated carbon calculator, trips on e-scooters in Northampton have replaced nearly an estimated two million car journeys.
The use of e-scooters instead of cars in Northampton has saved the town from more than 900 tonnes of harmful carbon dioxide emissions - the equivalent of over 111 million smart phone charges.
According to data from the most recent rider survey in Northampton, nearly a third of riders said they used an e-scooter for a journey they would otherwise have made by car or taxi.
A total of 43% of riders used e-scooters for their commute to work or education, with 20% using them for social engagements and 16% using them for errands and shopping.
James Bolton, general manager, Voi UK, said: “Since we started operating in Northampton four years ago, e-scooters have become an essential part of many residents’ lives.
“It’s great to reach another milestone in supporting people in Northampton to choose a safe, affordable and sustainable method of transport in the town.
“We’re always looking to improve our service in Northampton, working closely with West Northamptonshire Council and Northamptonshire Police.”
Cllr Phil Larratt, West Northamptonshire Council’s cabinet member for Highways and Transport said: “E-scooters offer a sustainable and cost-effective way for people to get from A to B, with many people using them on a daily basis for work and leisure.
"As we hit a major milestone of 4 million rides in Northampton, I would like to remind riders that we need to work together to continue to improve and ensure the safety of everyone.”
